Close to the child The challenge of the next century will be to translate the progress in biological knowledge into identifying children at risk and to help them develop into adults aware of their deficiencies as well as their capacities. Also, we will have to unravel the network of risk factors in upbringing, society and an environment that turns a young child into an adultish bewildered one. Furthermore, the child entering the world of Internet as well as Internet penetrating into the child's world. The young child handling a gun in a war that aims far beyond his comprehension. How we can discern biological from environmental effects in a 'difficult' child is a key question in the strategy in helping that child. Are young rapists protagonists of a changing world? Is the increase in 'difficult' children and adolescents a result of the fact that women tend to have their children at a more advanced age? This session will focus on these questions in order to search for answers to give to the parents, the teachers and non-professionals surrounding the child, so that they can support him with more empathy, more respect as well as more effective help strategies.
