Dear Colleague,

On behalf of the Organization and Scientific Program committees of the 18th European Health Psychology Society (EHPS) Conference, and the host organization of the conference, the Department of Psychology at the University of Helsinki, I have a great pleasure and honour to welcome you to Helsinki, Finland.

The conference promises to be a rich and stimulating international event, contributing to the research, practice, policy and conceptual development of health psychology. The Helsinki conference provides a unique opportunity to bring together experts in the field of health psychology from all over the world to exchange ideas, information and the latest research findings. The conference welcomes the most important and innovative contributions of research, as the high level of the presentations accepted indicates.

The Scientific Programme Committee has had a great pleasure of inviting experts of health psychology research as keynote speakers, and has assembled a number of outstanding speakers that have accepted our invitation. These speakers include Jens B. Asendorpf from Germany, Liisa Keltikangas-Järvinen from Finland, Hannah McGee from Ireland, Karen A. Matthews from USA, Brian Oldenburg from Australia, and Michael F. Scheier from USA.

Besides the scientific activities, the conference offers the opportunity the send some days in Helsinki. We also believe that Helsinki, the capital of the republic of Finland, a modern city with over half a million inhabitants, standing on a peninsula and several islands in the Baltic sea will offer participants an exciting and attractive environment during the mid-summer of 2004.

I wish you a profitable and interesting exchange of knowledge, and a pleasant stay in Helsinki.

The European Health Psychology Society (EHPS) is a professional organization promoting empirical and theoretical research and applications of health psychology. It is engaged in the active interchange of information with other scientific associations throughout the world, and in advancing the international achievement of its goals. Established in 1986, the Society has had annual conferences since 1988 all over Europe, providing a forum for health psychologists to meet, exchange ideas and develop collaboration.

 

 

Local host

The Department of Psychology at the University of Helsinki is an active and innovative centre for research and education. Not only is it the largest university department of psychology in Finland, it has also gained a top-ranking position in terms of both the quality of its scientific research and its educational achievements.

Helsinki offers an attractive setting for the conference, which will be held in the historic university premises dating back to the Russian regime of the 1830s. Located by the Baltic Sea with its beautiful archipelago, Helsinki is a renowned conference city. There is much to see and do during the long days and light nights of the summer months, in an atmosphere that is friendly, safe and relaxed.
